The 9 islands of the Azores Archipelago…
Geographically there are 3 distinct groups of Azores Islands which are spread out over 370 miles:
Occidental Group:
The Occidental Group is the most westerly and therefore, closer to the USA. It consists of 2 islands: Flores, (with it’s breathtaking waterfalls and lakes) and Corvo, (with its spectacular volcanic crater).
Central Group:
The Central Group is made up of 5 islands; Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico and Faial and they are a great location if you love to island hop, hike and explore.
Oriental Group:
The Oriental Group consists of Santa Maria, (the oldest island in the archipelago) and São Miguel Island. Together they are the most easterly of the islands and the closest to Portugal mainland.
The largest of all of the Islands is São Miguel and is where you will find the international hub airport of Ponta Delgada, (PDL). From there you can pick up interconnecting flights to all of the islands in the archipelago.
When is the best time to visit the azores?
The best time to visit the Azores is late spring to early autumn, (fall) - June to October. However, the sunshine and warmth can often run into November. That said, October-April, (low season) can be the perfect time for hiking in cooler temperatures.

What are the Azores best known for?
Besides the lush green landscapes, breathtaking views, volcanic craters and its lakes & hot springs, the Azores is synonymously known as being one of the best locations on the planet to spot whales and dolphins. It is a Mid-Atlantic stop for up to 28 species of whales and dolphins, not to mention being the year-round home to sperm whales, common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. If you are very lucky, at certain times of the year, you’ll get the chance see orcas swimming in their natural habitat and the largest of all marine mammals - the blue whale.

The official language of the Azores is Portuguese. However, whilst it is not common to find many english speakers within the more rural village populations, you will find that the majority of the agents and businesses operating within tourism will all have staff that speak english.
What is the best way to travel to the Azores?
As the Azores becomes more popular as a European vacation destination, the easier it is becoming to fly here. The simplest way to get to the Azores is by using direct international flights. However, if the option of a direct flight isn’t available to you, then a short stop in either Lisbon or Porto will give you access to a number of different airline options that fly to the archipelago; the most popular being Azores Airlines, Ryanair or TAP.
