Flores Island Overview…
For nature lovers who are wondering which Azores islands to visit, Flores Island has to be on your bucket list. It is a land of natural marvels, with waterfalls, lakes, fast running streams and volcanically formed landscapes that could have quite easily been plucked directly from the Jurassic Park movie set.
Flores Island is the most westerly point of Europe and along with its neighbouring island of Corvo, forms the western group of islands in the Azores Archipelago.
Flores sits atop the North American tectonic plate; it is geologically separated from the rest of the Azores Archipelago by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which runs along the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. The ridge separates the North American, Eurasian and the African tectonic plates, making Flores a volcanically rich area.
The island has the highest number of endemic species per unit area of the archipelago. One of the many reasons why, in 2009, the total terrestrial area of Flores Island was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO.
Located between the municipalities of Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha; a short 20 minutes hike from the main road and parking area, you will find one of natures most wonderful masterpieces - Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro / Poço da Alagoinha - a sheer green wall of spectacular waterfalls that run into a mirror-like reflective pool. Absolutely breathtaking and not to be missed!
