Terceira Island Overview…
Terceira Island as it’s name implies, was the third Island in the archipelago to be discovered.
It is one of the largest islands in the Azores archipelago and is the second most populated; with over 56,000 residents.
It is the location of the Azores' oldest city, Angra do Heroísmo, dating back to 1534. It was the historical capital of the archipelago and is a UNESCO registered World Heritage Site.
This island consists of four overlapping stratovolcanoes that developed over a geologic structure called the Terceira Rift: a triple junction between the Eurasian, African and North American tectonic plates.
