Corvo Island Overview…

Corvo Island is the smallest of the Azores islands, located in the extreme northwest of the Archipelago. It is also the northernmost in Macronesia. It is so remote that electricity was only installed here in 1963. It has a population of approximately 384 inhabitants; making it the smallest single municipality in the Azores and in Portugal!..

…and along with it’s sister island of Flores, it makes up the Western Group of Azorean Islands, (Ocidental)

In 2007 the whole of the island was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The easiest and most adventurous way to see Corvo Island is to hop on a zodiac boat from the nearby island of Flores. The boat ride itself is exhilarating and spectacular. You might even strike it lucky and see dolphins and whales on the way over. You’ll also get the chance to see the dramatic coast line of Flores Island and explore its sea caves as part of this brilliant day trip.

The highlight of Corvo Island is Caldeirão - The extinct volcanic crater which spans 3.5km in diameter. Legend has it that the lakes, bogs and volcanic cones inside the crater depict the 9 islands of the Azores. You can hike around the crater, or walk down inside the crater to the lake. The views and the sound of silence is incredible.
